Brian Fay, Blizzard Entertainment, Senior Sculptor
Tell us more about your winning Into the Pixel piece – what does it showcase? How long did it take to create?
My piece is the Grommash Hellscream statue, from World of Warcraft. This sculpture took quite a bit of time, spread out over 4 or 5 months from start to finish. It was sculpted traditionally using hard wax. Once it was finished, silicone molds were made and the final model was cast in plastic urethane.
What inspired you to become a gaming artist?
I was drawn to the wide range of work that I would be able to get my hands on. As a sculptor, you can sometimes get stuck working in one particular style. At Blizzard, I’m able to change it up with each project to the next.
What has been your favorite piece you have ever worked on and why?
My favorite piece is the 2012 Blizzard Employee Holiday Gift Treasure Goblin Statue. The project was sort of a last minute idea that ended up being a big hit. I even made a spare Santa hat head that could be swapped out during the holidays.
Are there any games where the art really resonated with you? What about in any other mediums like TV/movies/books?
I became a huge fan of Diablo 3 because of the art of the game. Growing up I was big into the Spawn comics. I loved the art style and would spend hours trying to draw like McFarlane and Capullo. I think it’s probably why I resonated so well with Diablo.
Are there any interesting facts or tidbits about game artists or yourself you’d like to share?
I have a massive Star Wars figure obsession that goes back to when I was a kid. I have almost every Star Wars figure ever made with the exception of the extremely rare/expensive ones.
Do you have any art galleries or profiles online where people can check out your work?
